Robert D. Sloop, age 91 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022 at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha, NE.
Robert Duane Sloop was born the oldest child of Paul L. and Lucinda E. (McNutt) Sloop on March 21, 1930. Robert was a graduate of the Hamburg High School class of 1949. In 1950, he was drafted by the United States Army and attended basic training with the 8th Infantry Division at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. While in the Army, Robert qualified as an expert marksman on the firing range. From 1950-1952, Robert served in North Korea where he earned the rank of Sergeant. Robert was an artillery loader and later cooked for over 180 men as a trained army cook.
After being honorably discharged in 1952, Robert returned home to Hamburg and began working for Inter-State Nurseries. In 1954, Robert married Katherine Elizabeth Albee at the Hamburg United Methodist Church. Robert and Katherine were blessed with two children, Kevin and Robbi. Throughout his life, Robert was a hard worker who held many jobs including building grain silos, hauling apples for Wright’s orchard, construction, and owning his own businesses. In his free time, Robert was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and trapping. He raised livestock and especially loved his pet dogs. He enjoyed classic cars and racing stock cars. Robert never missed an opportunity to tell interesting stories of his life’s adventures.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Roland (Buddy), Keith, and John Paul.
He is survived by his brother, Larry F. Sloop of Hamburg, his son, Kevin Sloop of Hamburg and daughter, Robbi Travis (Joe) of Sidney. Robert is also survived by his grandchildren, Courtney Sloop (Christopher Dos Santos) of Hamburg, Jeremy (Larissa), of Waterloo, NE, Justin (Rick Sheets) of Sidney, IA and Jeff Travis (Heather), of Norwalk, IA, 10 great grandchildren and nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Family Visitation will be held on Friday, February 18, 2022 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. A Graveside Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive Cemetery southeast of Hamburg with Military Honors conducted by the Hamburg American Legion Post.
