Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator Course to be offered in February

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Iowa Central Community College are offering a four-day workshop that will prepare attendees to become certified as Commercial Pesticide Applicators.This course will focus on materials needed to take the Iowa Core Manual Exam and Categories 1A (Ag Weed Control), 1B (Ag Insect Control) and 1C (Ag Disease Control).

Beef feedlot webinar series to be offered in February

Just in time for some mid-winter learning, the Iowa Beef Center is hosting a five-part feedlot webinar series this month.Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Beef Specialist Erika Lundy-Woolfolk is organizing the series that will be held every Thursday in February.“Each session has a unique topic that was chosen based on input from producers at the grassroots level,” she said.

‘Farmers’ share perspectives on climate change, land rents and conservation in latest Iowa Farm Poll

Although they wear many hats, perform many jobs and are referred to using many terms, it turns out the people who grow Iowa’s crops and livestock prefer to be called “farmers.”The 2023 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll was released this winter and asked those surveyed what they preferred to be called.

Number of donors to the Chickadee Tax Check-off continues to decline

Last year, more than 5,800 Iowa taxpayers helped boost wildlife conservation with donations to the Fish and Wildlife Fund on their state tax form.While that may sound like a lot, over the last 20 years, the number of donors has declined by 50 percent and represents only about 0.4 percent of the total taxpayers in Iowa.This year, the decline in donors signaled a slight decline in donations as well, which totaled a little under $147,000, a decrease of roughly $8,000 from the previous year.“We are extremely thankful for those who donate to wildlife conservation with their tax refunds!

Missouri and Big Sioux rivers paddlefish fishing season now underway

The paddlefish snagging season on the Missouri and Big Sioux rivers is now open through April 30 (sunrise to sunset).Anglers fishing for paddlefish must have a valid Iowa fishing license, along with a special paddlefish license and unused transportation tag(s).Please keep track of your catch and effort and complete the electronic survey after the paddlefish season whether you harvested a fish or not.
