It has been bitterly cold lately! With cold winters, our heating bills go up. One thing many people do to save money on home heating bills is to use wood burning stoves and fireplaces to supplement the heat inside homes throughout winter. However, if the firewood is stored incorrectly insect issues can develop inside our homes.

January Science Club

Sidney elementary students in the January Science Club created DNA with licorice and jelly beans. Students studied what makes up DNA and what dominant traits students got from their parents. Students also completed experiments using their own saliva. Submitted by Teresa Crecelius.

County Farm Bureau Leadership attends IFBF Annual Meeting

The 2024 Iowa Farm Bureau Federation Annual Meeting and County Leadership Conference was held in Des Moines on December 10 and 11. Among those in attendance were Mills County Farm Bureau board members President Stephanie Bowden and Voting Delegate Bret Hayes and Fremont County Farm Bureau board members President Dave Roberts, Voting Delegate Steve Howe, Internal Study Committee Chair Brent Lorimor, Vice President Tyler Woodward, and Abby Woodward. The Woodwards are also the District 9 Young Farmer Advisory Committee Members.

Tips for Growing Onions

Planting onions from small bulbs or “sets” is not the best way to grow large onions for storage. Plants grown from sets often begin blooming in mid-summer and stubbornly refuse to stop. Once that happens, onion bulbs don’t increase much in size.
