Photos by Kirt Manion CherryRoad Media The Southwest Iowa wrestling team competed in a pair of Nebraska tournaments over the weekend with the boys’ team placing eighth out of 16 teams at the Thuderbird Invitational hosted by Johnson County Central at Cook and the girls’ team placing 19th out of 23 teams at the Platteview Invite. Placers for the boys’ team were Andreas Buttry, second at 106; Kyle Kesterson, third at 138; Sam Daly, third at 220; and Chance Roof, fourth at 285.

After trailing by seven points going into the fourth quarter against Fremont-Mills on Tuesday, Dec. 14, the Sidney girls’ basketball team rallied to win the final quarter, 16-8, and win the game by one point, 44-43, before smashing Essex on Friday to close out the pre- Christmas schedule on a three-game winning streak. F-M led 21-18 at half and 35-28 going to the final period.

Members of the Southwest Iowa wrestling team competed at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln’s Monday Night Conflict on Dec. 6.

Sidney posted a pair of victories to bookend a set back against the state-rated Sacred Heart Irish from Falls City, Neb. Kaden Payne had 20 points to lead the Cowgirls past East Atchison, 51-37, on Tuesday, Dec.

After opening last week with a Tuesday win over East Atchison 74-52, the Cowboy basketball team won in a 87-31 rout of Griswold on Friday. Sidney topped East Atchison by a nine-point margin in the first quarter and an 11-point margin in the third quarter to account for most of the difference on the final scoreboard.
