A strong Falls City Sacred Heart team handed the Sidney boys’ basketball team a 65-30 set back during action last week. Scoring for the Cowboys were Garrett Phillips, seven; Grant Whitehead, six; Conner Behrends, six; Cole Jorgensen, four; Kyle Beam, four; Matthew Benedict, two; and Jacob Hobbie, one.
Many kids are introduced to sports at an early age. Though young children may enjoy the recreational aspect of playing sports, a serious passion for a particular sport may develop as children reach high school. Such passions can be encouraged, as participating in sports can be highly beneficial for young people.
Action last week for the Sidney boys’ basketball team saw the Cowboys pick up three victories. Wins were against Nodaway Valley, Southwest Valley and Essex.
Victories over Southwest Valley, 48-32, and Essex, 59-26, raised Sidney’s record to 14-6 overall and 6-3 in Corner Conference play. Scoring for Sidney against Southwest Valley were Kaden Payne, 12; Chay Ward, 12; Harley Spurlock, 10; Emily Hutt, four; Avery Dowling, three; Makenna Laumann, three; Aunika Hayes, two; and Sadie Thompson, two.

Seven wrestlers from the Southwest Iowa girls’ team competed at the recent state tournamnet which was put on by the state’s wrestling coaches association. Clara Sapienza was the top finisher for the SWI team as she made it to dqy two of the tournament.
Being overweight or obese is a serious medical condition that can affect people of all ages. Carrying around too many pounds can be especially problematic for children because it may put them on the path to health problems that once generally only affected adults. Such issues include diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The Mayo Clinic advises that childhood obesity can contribute to poor self-esteem and depression. Fortunately, improving kids’ eating habits, such as ensuring kids eat nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods, and increasing physical activity are two ways to help kids maintain healthy weights. Parents who have concerns about their children’s weight should consult with a pediatrician, who may recommend a body mass index test.
