Phillips signs to play Yellowjackets basketball

Sidney High School senior Garett Phillips recently signed a letter of intent to play baskeball for the Graceland University Yellowjackets Basketball program in Lamoni. Graceland competes in one of the NAIA’s most challenging conferences — the Heart of America — and has seen national recognition, including a men’s basketball national championship in 2018. Phillips’ teammates were in attendance at the ceremony. State Wrestling

A pair of Southwest Iowa wrestlers competed at the state tournament last week. Seth Ettleman, 120 pounds, dropped a first round match to Kaden Pritchard of Eagle Groove by pin, battled back for a 4-0 decision over Conner Pickerell from Albia and fell out of the tournament after a 6-2 loss to CJ Davis of Notre Dame, Burlington. Ettleman wrapped his season with a record of 45-8.

Sidney 71, Essex 42 The Cowgirls scored 34 first quarter points on the way to a Tuesday, Jan. 31, win. Scoring leaders for Sidney were Avery Dowling, 15; Aunika Hayes, 11; Kaden Payne, 10; Sadie Thompson, eight; Ava Osborn, eight; Emily Hutt, six; Gabi Jacobs, five; Lilly Peters, four; Camdyn Hayes, two; and Macey Graham, two.
