The Sidney softball team was scheduled to open postseason play on Monday after a regular season of growth for a roster that featured underclassmen except for senior Lily Peters.Players on this year’s team were eighth graders: Alyssa Dowling, Keyana Haggerty, Averie Buttercase, Charli King; freshmen: Ashlyn Hayes, Hayley Mullins, Mackenna Mather; sophomores: Alyssa Melvin, McKenzie Thatcher, Bridget Kromminga; and Gabi Jacobs.Although the team was not able to record success in terms of wins, Coach Aaron Lang said he feels the evidence of the team’s work is obvious.“This is a very young team,” said Lang.
The Sidney baseball team wrapped up a 5-12 season with a 10-0 loss to Lenox at the IHSAA 1A Substate 8 tournament on Saturday, July 6.Players on this year’s roster were eighth graders Max Lang and Zach Boyd; freshmen: Calvin Johnson, Carter Jorgenson and Zac Hickman; sophomores: Tate Mount and Aiden Stenzel; Juniors: Michael Hensley, Isaac Hutt and Kolt Payne; and seniors: Gabe Johnson and Seth Ettleman.Wins for this year’s team came against East Mills, 6-4; Essex, 15-0; Fremont-Mills, 7-1; Griswold, 7-1; and Essex, 20-1.Stat leaders were Michael Hensley for hits and RBI; Seth Ettleman, for wins by a pitcher; Isaac Hutt for earned run average; and Gabe Johnson for strikeouts.
The Sidney Stingrays, a team of 80 swimmers ranging in ages from preschool to 18-years old, practice three to four weeks in the month of June with 50 competing in meets.Lessons are from 10 to10:30 a.m., and 10:30 a.m.
The Sidney baseball team won one game in three contests last week.
The Sidney softball team had a doubleheader against Essex, on Monday, June 17, and followed that with contests on Tuesday, June 18, against Stanton, and Thursday, June 20, for a Corner Conference tournament game against Essex.
The 2024 Battle with the Bulls event took place on Friday and Saturday, June 21 and 22, at the Rodeo Arena in Sidney.
