The Special Olympics Regional Basketball tournament was held on Jan. 30 at Iowa Western Community College. Sidney’s Terry Moyer placed seventh while Audrey Goodman and Xavier Ratliff placed third. Mallari Olson and Helaena Wheeler placed first and will proceed to the state competition on Saturday March 15 in Iowa City. Submitted by Teresa Crecelius.

Grape Hospital recently hosted an Instant Pot party with 27 people in attendance. Party attendees learned how to use the Instant Pot and how to prep for and make freezer meals. French dip sandwiches were made in the Instant Pot and served at the party. Verlaine Hall won an Instant Pot at the party. The Essex and Hamburg Community School District School Boards met with Grundmeyer Leader Services on January 22, 2025, to review a pool of eight candidates. The boards have now announced three finalists in their search for a shared superintendent: Steven Barber, Lance Ridgely, and Ralph Watkins.
