Bumps in the road? Here’s the ‘hole’ story

This has been a pretty wild winter for many parts of Iowa. When you’re out on Iowa’s highways, you may notice more potholes than in the last few mild winters. The Iowa Transportation Commission just took steps to help get these potholes repaired by approving an additional $15 million specifically for additional maintenance to be done on interstates, U.S., and state highways.

Though plants might not seem like the first thing individuals think of when they ponder long-term investments, perennials can be just that. The home and garden experts at HGTV note that some perennials can live for a very long time. For example, according to HGTV, the colorful flowering plant peony, despite a blooming season that usually lasts just seven to 10 days, has been known to survive for 70 to 100 years. Hostas are another popular perennial because they require little maintenance, and that extra free time can add up over the course of the hosta’s life, which can exceed 15 years. Long-living perennials are not necessarily unusual, but gardeners should know that many perennials, and particularly those characterized as “shortlived,” tend to live around three years.

United Fund reaches goal

The generosity of the Hamburg community has once again made it possible for the local United Fund drive to reach its goal. Recently checks totaling $9,000 were distributed to representatives of eight non-profit groups whose volunteer efforts benefit all ages.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month which brings awareness of the need for people to access life-saving resources that prevent, detect, and treat colorectal cancer (CRC). Early-age onset CRC diagnoses are rising by 2% annually with well over 100,000 new cases each year, and by 2030 it is predicted that CRC will be the leading cause of death in people under age 50.
