State, local, and federal law enforcement assisted with an investigation in Fremont County from Dec. 5 to 8. Authorities brought in an array of experts representing several disciplines and significant assets to excavate, collect and examine soil samples from a site identified by a reporting party.

The Southwest Iowa girls’ wrestling team competed in the 23-team Riverside tournament last week. Results were as follows: Kaidynce Reafleng, third at 100 pounds. Bridget Kromminga, fifth at 125A pounds. Kayleanna Renshaw, first at 135B pounds. Clara Sapienza, first at 140 pounds. Emily Kesterson, first at 155 pounds. Braelyn Wilson, fourth at 155B pounds. Madison Hensley, first at 170A pounds. Tatiana Orozco, fourth at 170A pounds. True Scott, third at 235 pounds.

Sidney edges out East Atchinson, 59-57

Grant Whitehead scored 22 points and added a solid floor game with five assists and 10 steals to lead four double-digit scorers as the Sidney Cowboy basketball team edged East Atchison in a highly competitive 59-57 final on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Fairfax, Mo.

SWI boys’ wrestle at Lenox meet

The Southwest Iowa boys’ wrestling team competed in the 10-team Lenox Invite last week. Individual results were as follows: Seth Ettleman, first at 120 pounds. Gabe Johnson, first at 126 pounds. Flynt Bell, fourth at 152 pounds. Mavryc Morgan won a match by pin at 152 pounds. Blake Schaff won a match by pin at 132 pounds.

Special Olympics Iowa Inducts Inaugural Class into HOF

Special Olympics Iowa will induct the 2022 inaugural class, 9 individuals, into the Special Olympics Iowa Hall of Fame on December 15th. The Hall of Fame class includes Bobby Johnson (Waterloo), Deb Eldred (West Des Moines), Jody Sheriff (Greenfield), Joe and Eileen Wilson (Cedar Falls), Kim Lively (Ames), Randy Spurr (Norwalk), Ron Miller (Muscatine), and Suzie Moorman (Corydon).

Cowgirls’ basketball wins two of three

Sidney picked up two wins in three games with road wins over East Atchison on Dec. 6 and Griswold on Dec. 9. The only loss of the week came at home against Falls City Sacred Heart on Dec. 8. Sidney 55, East Atchison 52 The Cowgirls led 43-36 at the end of three quarters and held off a hard charge in the fourth to claim the win. Avery Dowling led the scoring by hitting five three-point shots and finishing with 19 points. Kaden Payne had 12 points, five steals and 11 rebounds. Aunika Hayes had 10 point and four stelas while Emily Hutt had six points and six assists. Other scorers were Ava Osborn, four; Gabi Jacobs, two; and Lilly Peters, two. FCSH 51, Sidney 36 The first and third quarters tripped up Sidney in a clash against perennial contender Falls City Sacred Heart out of Southeast Nebraska. The Irish scored 31 points in the first and third quarters combined while Sidney had 11 points in those two quarters. Avery Dowling had 12 points including nine on three-point shots. Aunika Hayes had seven points and 11 rebounds. Ava Osborn had five points while Emily Hutt had four points and four assists. Kaden Payne had four points and four blocked shots. Macey Graham also had four points. Sidney 39, Griswold 17 After building a 17-point halftime lead, the Cowgirls cruised to victory.

Iowa Finance Authority Awards Millions to Local Housing Trust

The Iowa Finance Authority Board of Directors today announced the award of a total of more than $11 million in grants to 26 Local Housing Trust Funds to support local housing initiatives. The grant awards are made available through the Local Housing Trust Fund program and are expected to assist 2,390 families.
