Vilsack unveils initiatives aimed at small, midsized operations

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Monday, March 6, announced new steps the Department of Agriculture is taking to recenter U.S. agriculture and benefit small and midsized operations, including a proposed new “Product of USA” labeling rule and an $89 million expansion of the USDA intermediary lending program.

Meet the staff of Golden Hills RC&D

Golden Hills Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) has recently hired several new staff members. Here’s an introduction to the staff team, both old and new. Cara Marker-Morgan, executive director Cara Marker-Morgan joined Golden Hills RC&D in 2017 as the Watershed Coordinator and most recently promoted to Executive Director in 2022. Cara attended highschool in southwest Iowa then went on to college at Peru State College majoring in Wildlife Ecology/Biology.

Iowa Crop Nutrient Guide updated

Newly updated crop nutrient recommendations are available in a recent publication from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Antonio Mallarino, professor in agronomy and extension specialist at Iowa State, announced researchbased updates to the extension publication PM 1688 A General Guide for Crop Nutrient and Limestone Recommendations in Iowa, available on the Iowa State University Extension Store and Soil Fertility websites.

IASB selects Executive Director

The Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) Board of Directors unanimously voted to extend an offer to Duane (D.T.) Magee to serve as the new executive director of the association. This offer is pending contractual agreement and background check. He will succeed Lisa Bartusek, who will be retiring June 30, 2023. D.T. is currently serving Norwalk Schools as the superintendent and brings 31 years of public school experience to IASB.
