Waubonsie’s 2024 Pawpaw Festival successful

Waubonsie State Park hosted the 2024 Pawpaw Festival on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Orchard Shelter. Included in the event was a tasting of pawpaw fruit along with live music, crafts for kids, pawpaw education, hot dogs and a potluck meal. The pawpaw tree is indigenous to 26 states from Nebraska to Florida and all the way to Onterio, Canada. The fruit of the pawpaw is a taste described as a cross between mango and banana.

From Friends of Waubonsie:

This Amazing event partnered with Golden Hills RC&D and Hometown Pride was the first in a few years we’ve been able to hold our ever-popular Pawpaw Festival. We welcomed over 50 guests and special guest Patrick O’Malley, an expert on the pawpaw, who shared a lot of interesting information about the plant. We’re on the northern reaches of its range but are still lucky enough for it to thrive here. A special thanks to Jamie Smidt Fowler from RC&D as well as Anna Stoysich who oversaw crafts. Thanks to Charlie Bohlen and Kevin and Valerie Seevers.
