With the NBA, NHL and College World Series, both baseball and softball, now in the rearview, the sports world is slowing down a bit and headed toward the Major League Baseball All Star break in under two weeks. With the all-star break comes a sports dead period, travel days for the MLB guys, where the major American sports schedule pauses for a moment. The break this year falls on Wednesday, July 17, and Thursday, July 18.MLB gets back to its action on July 19 and, before you know it, the pennant race will be in full swing with college sports, including football coming up, plus the NFL and, eventually, the World Series. In the spirit of that break from sports, I wanted to turn this column away from reaction to the sports world and into a mode of gratitude for all the folks who help make my job possible as the sports guy for the Nebraska City News-Press, Hamburg Reporter and Syracuse Journal-Democrat.It seems like a long time ago that I came to Nebraska City to cover sports for its local newspaper. And a lot has changed in that time.
