Iowa’s spring turkey season is right around the corner

Coming off record harvests in 2020 and again in 2023, Iowa’s spring turkey hunters could be living in the “good ol’ days.” And with three straight years of good hatches across much of the state, roughly 35,000 hunters are ready to hit the woods.“Two-year-old birds drive the population, do lots of the gobbling and tend to move more than the older toms, which is what hunters like,” said Jim Coffey, forest wildlife biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Farm custom rate survey shows what Iowans are charging and paying in 2024

Farmers who depend on custom work or provide custom services can review rates charged by others across the state in the latest Iowa Farm Custom Rate Survey.The 2024 report was published in the March edition of Ag Decision Maker and includes 130 responses and 2,805 custom rates provided by Iowa farmers, custom operators and farm managers.Farm tasks in the report include everything from planting to harvest, with cost data that reflect the average, median and range for each task.The rates in the report are expected to be charged or paid in 2024, and they include fuel and labor (unless otherwise noted).

Sidney City Council votes to fill vacancy

Members of the Sidney City Council recently voted unanimously to approve the appointment of Sandra Bengtson to fill the vacancy left on the council when Justin Shirley won the mayoral position following a special election last month.Sandra was a 1977 Sidney High School graduate and lifelong Fremont County resident, Bengtson worked as a legal assistant for 24 years before retiring in 2020.
