March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month which brings awareness of the need for people to access life-saving resources that prevent, detect, and treat colorectal cancer (CRC). Early-age onset CRC diagnoses are rising by 2% annually with well over 100,000 new cases each year, and by 2030 it is predicted that CRC will be the leading cause of death in people under age 50.

Humanities and the Physician

After 40 years as a doctor interacting with patients, in the last two and a half years the tables turned, and I’ve become the patient. Although most are good, I’ve found some doctors are detached, some are too quick, some would rather be somewhere else, some are even angry; but, when a physician who cares walks into the room, and I’m not exaggerating, the day becomes better, the pain becomes less, and hope fills my heart. Scientific knowledge is important, but the ability to convey honest concern, human thoughtfulness and compassion is equal in importance in this healing profession. So, how do we select pre-med students for that, or teach compassion in medical school?

Calling all fans of the written word

For those of you who continue to enjoy actually holding a book in your hand, appreciating the cover, reading the comments, and turning each page of the story, the Hamburg Public Library has these copies of written word waiting for you. The Amish Blessings series by Kelly Irvin continues with book 3 “Every Good Gift.” A young Amish girl has her heart stolen by an English boy whose future includes attending college.

Defending Iowa’s rural energy production

Domestic energy production – particularly ethanol and biodiesel – is critical to Iowa’s economy and our national security. In Iowa, our biofuels industry supports roughly 57,000 jobs and generates $7.2 billion towards our GDP. Iowa is also home to 42 ethanol plants and 11 biodiesel facilities, which respectively produce 4.7 billion gallons of ethanol and 410 million gallons of biodiesel annually.

As the world’s largest membership nonprofit dedicated to planting trees, the Arbor Day Foundation brings momentum to Girl Scouts’ commitment to 5 million climate supportive actions by 2026, including planting trees, protecting existing canopies, and providing tree education for Girl Scouts.
