The rider in this event leans back against the bucking horse and spurs in an up and down motion with his legs, again in rhythm with the motion of the horse.

Chapman nominated for state Hall of Fame

The late Calvin Chapman finally got his hearing in front of the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission, but his most enthusiastic supporter was not in attendance. Chapman’s great-granddaughter, Teresa Geer-Teater, has been faithfully submitting her ancestor for consideration by the commission (she called and visited the News-Press offices to discuss her project, and I last spoke with her about her great-grandfather while standing alongside her car on Central Avenue on a brisk December day in 2021), and her date had been set: July 20. Unfortunately, she passed away unexpectedly on July 12, and the application she had prepared for Chapman was submitted by her daughter and read into the official record by a member of the Hall of Fame Commission.

Summer’s vegetable bounty

The medical profession has always told us how important it is to eat plenty of vegetables in our diet. I am not always one to have followed their advice. However come summer time in Iowa that advice is so easy to do. July and August allow our gardens and farmers markets to be filled with fresh cucumbers, peas, new potatoes, radishes, green beans, ruby red tomatoes, and the best of all—fresh sweet corn!

Fremont County Sheriff Office

On July 22 at approximately10:35 p.m., Fremont County deputies were called to the Fremont County campgrounds south of Sidney for a report of a man who had threatened to kill three campers. Prior to law enforcement arrival, the male fled into a wooded area near the Fremont County Golf Course.
