Wildwood Featured Artist: Anita Carmichael

A 40-year fascination with glass continues for Anita Carmichael of Beaver Lake, whose artwork is featured at the Wildwood Historic Center Art Barn. Carmichael, who is originally from Texas, has been in health care for 30 years (she’s currently a mammography technician at CHI), and she takes pride in her studio that contains three kilns, five wet saws, and many pounds of glass.

Grassley’s office to offer Capitol grounds tours in D.C.

While COVID-19 restrictions have left the U.S. Capitol largely closed to public tours, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is creating new opportunities for Iowans to witness the history and architecture of the legislative branch of government. Grassley’s office is now offering one-of-a-kind staff-led walking tours of the U.S. Capitol grounds for Iowans visiting Washington, D.C.

Inflammation and the Immune System

Many of my patients will say “Doctor, I am so inflamed”. The use of the word inflammation is commonplace as we search the market for anti-inflammatory diets or self-help books on inflammation. The inflammatory response created by the immune system contributes to healing, but when left unchecked can contribute to chronic disease, allergy, and non-specific symptoms such as achy joints, fatigue, and malaise. The immune system has two main parts. The first of these is the innate immune system which is the body’s first line of defense. The innate immune system acts as a barrier that prevents harmful materials from entering the body and responds quickly when needed. The second part is the adaptive immune system. This system is more specialized and takes over if the innate immune system is unsuccessful. The adaptive immune system responds slower than the innate immune system but more accurately.
