How Does Your Garden Grow?

My name isn’t Mary, but sometimes, like the Nursery rhyme – I am quite contrary and I’m having a difficult time to getting my garden to grow this year. I don’t have silver bells and cockle shells, all in a row, but I have half clay and the other half, road rock that passes for my garden soil this year.

Why isn’t July 2 the day to celebrate American independence?

The Declaration of Independence and July Fourth are indelibly linked. But you may need to be an American history buff to know that the link is less direct than it may seem. The Continental Congress declared American independence on July 2, even though the final wording of the Declaration of Independence had yet to be approved. That approval came two days later, which is why American independence is celebrated on July 4. Furthermore, the Declaration of Independence now on display at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., was not signed on July 4. The signatures on that document, which have been a source of pride for descendants of the signers for centuries, were written on August 2, a full month after the Congress declared its independence from Great Britain. And in a reflection of life in the 18th century, Great Britain did not even receive the declaration until November of 1776.

Brownville Concert Series presents Darryl White Quintet

The Brownville Concert Series is thrilled to have The Darryl White Quintet! Darryl White, Jeff Jenkins, Hans Sturm, Michael Pujado, and Michael Warren play a wonderful mixture of traditional jazz, contemporary styles and even jazz spirituals. In 2020, Darryl White recorded his fifth record. This record was a wonderful and heartfelt tribute to all those who dealt with loss of loved ones and injustice. Much of the music from this album will be featured in this concert along with a sprinkling of traditional jazz that includes music from Louis Armstrong to Miles Davis. It’s sure to be one you won’t want to miss! The show will be in cabaret on Friday & Saturday, July 15th & 16th at 7:30pm, and Sunday, July 17th at 2:00pm. We give special thanks to Blake & Julia Hurst, Kay Rosenbohm, and Charles & Carole James for helping to sponsor these shows. The Sunday show will be dedicated in memory of Charles Anderson and in honor of Jody Anderson. Darryl White is offering to give a free Trumpet Master Class at 2:00-3:00pm on Saturday July 16 plus a free ticket to the show. Interested students must call the Box Office by July 8th to register.
