Roller skating memories

I was in second grade of school (about 1947 or 48) when Santa Claus left a pair of clamp-on roller skates under the tree for me. I really don’t know what he was thinking because we lived in the country and there wasn’t a sidewalk within miles of our house! These skates fit over my shoes and adjusted in length so even my brother could make use of them.

Safety upgrades for seniors’ homes

Many seniors want to spend as long as possible residing in the comforts of their own homes. According to AARP’s 2021 “Home and Community Preferences Survey,” more than three-quarters of U.S. adults age 50 and older prefer living at home. But getting older often comes with certain deficits that may not make current living situations the safest for seniors.

Recognizing PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, was first listed as a medical diagnosis in 1980. However, it has been recognized and called by many different names throughout history. The first recorded description of PTSD is in the Epic of Gilgamesh which dates back to 2100 B.C. In The Iliad and The Odyssey, Homer wrote about Trojan War soldiers exhibiting the symptoms of PTSD. Shakespeare described a character in King Henry IV who suffered from post-traumatic nightmares.
