Following are summaries of the February Fremont County Board of Supervisors meetings, written from the meeting minutes: Feb. 2: The board appointed Steven Stenzel to the Fremont County Judicial Magistrate Appointing Commission.
Weather permitting, the Nebraska Department of Transportation planned to reopen the Missouri River Bridge at Nebraska City to normal four-lane, two-way traffic on March 7. Repair work on the joints and deck on the exterior and rehabilitation work on the interior that began during the 2021 construction season was scheduled to be completed on March 4.
The updated 2022 calendar year runoff forecast for the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa, continues to be below average. “The runoff in February was less than predicted, and we expect the lower-than-average runoff to continue in the coming months,” said John Remus, chief of the U.S.
The Sidney High School Music Department presented Celebration 2022 on Mar. 3-4, and premiered the school’s brand new gymnatorium for this event.
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) have confirmed a positive case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Pottawattamie County. The virus was found in a non-commercial, backyard poultry flock.

Discussion on a proposed Invenergy wind turbine farm in Page and Fremont counties continued March 1 during an evening Page County Board of Supervisors meeting. About 20 residents of southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri spoke during the two-hour-long comment period in the meeting.
After garnering second place finishes at the Sectional and District event, Southwest Iowa’s (SWI) Seth Ettleman became the first wrestler from that program to make the state tournament since 2015. Sidney, as a standalone program, last sent a wrestler to the state tournament back in 2004.
Community members packed the Marnie School gymnasium stands on Feb. 28 to attend the public hearing on a possible charter school, which could be the last attempt to bring a high school to Hamburg.
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Fremont County will host a Certified Handlers Continuing Instruction Course (CIC) for commercial pesticide applicators Wednesday, March 9, 2022. The program, provided by the ISU Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP), is available at office locations across Iowa.
