Tree of Lights

The George C. Grape Community Hospital Auxiliary is thrilled with the response to their 2021 Tree of Lights campaign. There were 283 lights lit on the tree in front of the hospital in memory or in honor of loved ones this Christmas season. The glow from those lights will continue through the coming year as the Grape Hospital Auxiliary uses your donations to help fund their 2021 projects.

South Hamburg Blues

About once a week, First Wife Hallie and I take a ride down through the south end of the old burg and lament the fact that it sure ain’t what it used to be. Used to be two or three nice homes in every block of Argyle, Main, Park and Washington Streets, but the really nasty flood of 2019 took all of those away. Now it’s just empty houses, vacant lots and precious few businesses.

Humanity in Medicine

What does it mean to practice humanity in medicine? The phrase is used as a tagline and in book titles. Humanity and compassion in medicine is touted as something to aspire to, a noble accomplishment. But in reality, the biomedical model of health, the business model for healthcare, is not set up to support it. Algorithms and best practices set forth by insurance companies and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid do not account for the time required to establish meaningful human interaction between patient and caregiver.
