The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s basketball player Jada Powell the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II women’s basketball for the week of February 3 to 9.


Powell, a freshman from Des Moines, scored 21 points and grabbed 22 rebounds as the Bears ended an eight-game losing streak with a 104-57 win over Little Priest Tribal (LPT) Feb. 8 inside the DMACC gymnasium. On Feb. 5, Powell had another double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds in a 71-69 loss to Southeastern Community College (SECC), also inside the DMACC gymnasium.


Powell’s 17.5 scoring average and 18 rebounding average in those two games boosted her season averages to 10.1 points and 10 rebounds a game. She has scored 191 points and pulled down 190 rebounds this season. Powell is shooting 35 percent from the field, having made 78 of 221 field goal attempts. She is 14-of-48 from three-point range and 21-of-47 from the free throw line. Powell’s 190 rebounds include 141 defensive rebounds. Her season also includes 23 assists, 19 steals and 12 blocked shots.


The DMACC women’s basketball team faces Kirkwood Community College (KCC) tonight at Cedar Rapids. DMACC is 9-15 overall and 3-8 in the ICCAC. KCC, ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, is 22-2 overall and 9-1 in the ICCAC. KCC defeated DMACC 89-58 when the two teams played Jan. 15 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
