For the first time in 11 attempts, the Sidney Cowboys defeated the Lourdes Central Knights 56-47 on Saturday, January 18 at Lourdes.
From the 2006 season to 2019-20, the Knights and Cowboys have met 11 times.
Lourdes had a 10-game win streak against Sidney heading into Saturday’s game.
Both teams had similar records and were looking to end three-game losing skids.
Blake Miller scored nine points in the first two quarters combined as Lourdes went into halftime with a 23-18 lead.
Sidney started to heat up in the second half and hit six three’s.  Garrett Phillips hit three three-pointers for Sidney in the second half. “We got Miller in foul trouble and they had to switch to a 2-3 zone which opened up a lot of opportunities for us,” Coach Kent Larsen said.  “That was really the difference in the game.  We just hot from the three-point line.”
In the third quarter, Zach Teserak scored five points and Leo Sibinelli hit four free-throws.  Will Welsh and Drew Walton added a couple buckets for the Knights, and Sidney led 37-36 heading into the fourth.
Lourdes still carried a one-point lead with four minutes left before Sidney got a big three from Cole Jorgenson.
Sidney was able to hit their free-throws down the stretch and come away with win.
“We went to our keep away game and Noah Jorgenson and Garrett Phillips were money from the free-throw line,” Larsen said.
