For the first time all season long, the Peru State volleyball team won back-to-back matches. On Saturday, the Bobcats defeated Graceland and Haskell Indian Nation University in Lamoni, Iowa.
The Bobcats defeated the hosts 23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 to win the Heart of America Athletic Conference match-up. With the win, the 'Cats improved to 6-18 overall and more importantly, went ahead of Graceland in the conference standings with a 3-5 Heart mark. Graceland fell to 6-17 on the year and are now 2-7 in conference play.
After taking down the hosts, Peru State defeated the Fighting Indians 19-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-15. With the win, the 'Cats improved to 7-18 on the season. Haskell fell to 7-13.
First Set Action
After Graceland scored the first point of the match, Claire Cudney (Marysville, Kan.) put down a kill from Cassidy Davis (Colorado Springs, Colo.). A service ace followed from Darlene Quinonez
Holguin (Anthony, N.M.) and then Quinonez Holguin fed a set to Savanna Davis (Anchorage, Alaska) to lead 3-1.
Peru State would extend its lead to 11-5 when Grace Frederick (Benkelman) put down a kill on an overpass. The 'Cats would extend their lead to 18-10 on a Cudney kill on an assist from Quinonez Holguin.
However, that eight-point lead would not hold up as the 'Jackets slowly worked way back into the set. Peru State would lead 23-14 only to see Graceland score 11 straight points for the 25-23 win.
Second Set Action
A block by S. Davis started the second set for the Bobcats' first point. An error on Graceland was followed by a service ace by Quinonez Holguin to give Peru State a 3-0 lead.
The Yellowjackets would never lead in the set as the Bobcats would lead by as many as nine at 21-12 after a Graceland attack error. The 'Jackets would get as close as six at 22-16 before they had a service error. Pyper Roseberry (Ralston) would score the last point of the second set with a kill on an assist from C. Davis.
Third Set Action
Graceland would lead for the early part of the third set until Alexis Cox (Brighton, Colo.) landed a service ace to put the Bobcats up 10-9.
The Yellowjackets would regain the lead and led 17-14 before having back-to-back setting errors. A kill by Alexandra Chavarria (Hollister, Calif.) tied the game at 17-17. Two more errors put the 'Cats up by two and the Bobcats would go on to win with Tyra Mollhoff (Lincoln) getting the final point with a kill off an assist from C. Davis.
Fourth Set Action
After the Yellowjackets took a 2-0 lead, S. Davis got a kill from Quinonez Holguin. An attack error on Graceland tied it at 2-2. As the final score would indicate, there would be ten ties the rest of the way.
Graceland would lead by three at 12-9 before Frederick got a kill from Quinonez Holguin. The Yellowjackets would maintain the lead and still led by three at 18-15 before Graceland had a service error. S. Davis and Mallory Matthies (Omaha) would get a block to pull the 'Cats within one. An attacking error on the 'Jackets knotted the score at 18-18.
Again, the 'Jackets would respond and went up 20-18 before Cudney got a kill from Quinonez Holguin. A block by Matthies would then tie the score at 20-20. Peru State would go ahead on a Yellowjacket hitting error. A service ace from Cudney would force a Graceland timeout with Peru State leading 22-20.
Peru State would maintain the lead even though Graceland would be back within one at 22-21 and 24-23 before Matthies would get the winning kill on an assist from Quinonez Holguin.
Neither team hit the ball well in the match as the Bobcats finished hitting .113 with the Yellowjackets hitting .026. Both teams finished with eight service aces.
The digs were nearly identical as the 'Cats had one more than Graceland as they dug up 67 balls. Both teams blocked well as the Bobcats had a season-high 12 total blocks compared to nine for the Yellowjackets.
Peru Individual Statistics
Cudney led the hitting efforts for the Bobcats as she finished with nine kills. Frederick added eight kills while hitting .238. Chavarria and S. Davis each had six kills while Matthies added five.
Quinonez Holguin led the setting efforts as she finished with 18 assists and C. Davis added 12.
Quinonez Holguin and Arianna Waschowski (Bellevue) each had two of the team's eight service aces. Cudney, Cox, C. Davis, and Cheyenne Birkle (Holden, Mo.) each finished with one.
Cudney led the team defensively as she had 13 digs. C. Davis and Waschowski each had 11 digs while Birkle finished with ten.
S. Davis had her best night at the net in terms of blocking as she was credited with three ace blocks and four block assists. Matthies and Frederick each had one solo block. Matthies added four block assists while Mollhoff added three block assists. Cudney finished with two block assists while Chavarria was credited with one.
Haskell Indian Nations Highlights
First Set Action
Haskell scored the first three points of the first set before Chavarria put down a set from C. Davis. The Fighting Indians would hold the lead until the middle of the set when Chavarria and C. Davis hooked up again to tie the score at 16-16 which forced a Haskell timeout.
An attack error by Haskell was followed by a kill by Alyssa Childers (Lincoln) on an assist from C. Davis to give Peru State its only lead of the set. The Fighting Indians would finish off the set with a 7-1 run to win 25-19.
Second Set Action
The second set was tight throughout as there were 11 ties. Quinonez Holguin started the set with a service ace and then got an assist when Cudney landed a kill.
After being tied numerous times, after the score was knotted at 10-10, Frederick got a kill from C. Davis and then Cudney put down a spike from Chavarria. Mollhoff added a kill from Davis and then Chavarria got a block to give Peru State a four-point lead. This forced a Fighting Indians timeout after which Haskell slowly fought its way back and eventually tied it at 16-16.
Haskell would go on to take its largest lead of four at 22-18, but the 'Cats would not quit. After an attack error by the Fighting Indians, C. Davis would get a setter dump to pull Peru State within two. Mollhoff and Frederick would get back-to-back kills from C. Davis to tie the score at 22-22. Mollhoff would give Peru State the lead with a kill from Chavarria forcing another Haskell timeout. Mollhoff would add a kill to give the 'Cats set point only to see Haskell tie it at 24-24.
Chavarria got a kill from C. Davis to put the Bobcats ahead 25-24. A hitting error by the Fighting Indians gave Peru State the second set win.
Third Set Action
Like the second set, the third set was tight as well, but only saw nine ties. Peru State jumped to a 10-5 advantage after a Birkle had a service ace. The 'Cats would hold the lead until the Fighting Indians would come back to tie it at 16-16.
The set would be tied at 17 and 19 before Chavarria broke the tie with a kill from C. Davis. After a Fighting Indians attack error, Mollhoff and C. Davis hooked up again to put the Bobcats up 22-19 which forced a Haskell timeout.
Peru State would get a point on a two-hit call on Haskell only to see the Fighting Indians close the score to 23-22. Chavarria and Davis would give the 'Cats set point before Haskell made it a one-point lead. Chavarria would get the final point with a kill on an assist from Cox.
Fourth Set Action
A kill by Roseberry on an assist from Quinonez Holguin was followed by a Cudney kill to give Peru State an early 2-0 lead.
After the game was tied at 3-3, Frederick got a kill from Quinonez Holguin and the Bobcats never trailed after that point.
However, the Fighting Indians would continue to fight as they managed to tie it up at 15-15 before the Bobcats would score the next ten points, all behind the serving of Waschowski to get the match win. Fittingly, Waschowski would serve up an ace for the final point.
Peru State outhit the Fighting Indians .220 to .148 and had 22 more kills as the 'Cats finished with 66. Haskell did have two more service aces in the match as they finished with eight.
The Bobcats finished with 95 digs compared to 84 for Haskell. The 'Cats also had one more block than the Fighting Indians as Peru State had six total blocks.
Peru Individual Statistics
Four Bobcats finished in double figures in kills. Mollhoff had one of her most productive games as she led the team with 14 kills while hitting .400. Chavarria added 12 kills and hits .370 while Cudney added 11 kills. Frederick finished with ten kills and hit .304. Childers contributed eight kills.
C. Davis led the team with 32 assists while Quinonez Holguin added 19.
Waschowski and Birkle each had two ace serves while Cudney and Quinonez Holguin each finished with one.
Cudney and Waschowski each had 22 digs while Cox finished with 16. Birkle was also in double digits as she finished with ten. C. Davis and Quinonez Holguin added nine and eight respectively.
Cudney, Childers, Mollhoff, and Frederick were each credited with one solo block. Mollhoff added two block assists while Cudney and Chavarria each had one block assists.
Peru State will finish the season with nine straight Heart contests. The outcome will determine whether or not the Bobcats will make the post-season conference tournament.
The Bobcats will travel to Oskaloosa, Iowa, Tuesday night to face William Penn at 7 p.m. The Statesmen are 9-12 on the year and are just ahead of the 'Cats in the Heart with a 4-8 mark.
The 'Cats will be hosting a pair of contests on the weekend. Friday night's opponent will be Bendictine (Kan.) at 7 p.m. The Ravens are 9-15 overall and are 4-4 in Heart action.
On Saturday at 2 p.m., Baker (Kan.) will be the foe. The Wildcats are 10-15 overall and are 4-5 in Heart play.
