The Peru State volleyball team competed in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Fall Fling this weekend in Hutchinson, Kan. The KCAC hosted the event in the Hutchinson Sports Arena featuring action on several courts with 26 teams participating.
 
The Bobcats split their games on Friday as they opened the Fling with a 3-0 win over Tabor (Kan.) and then fell 3-1 to Friends (Kan.).
 
On Saturday, Peru State fell 3-1 to Bethel (Kan.) and then were swept by Bethany (Kan.) in a tight match to finish the tournament.
 
Peru State is now 1-4 on the season.
 
Only total stats are available for the Tabor match as a play-by-play was not provided. The Bobcats rallied from behind to take the first set 25-23 and then won 25-16 and 25-15.
 
Peru State hit .280 for the match while holding the Bluejays to a .047 hitting percentage. Service aces were abundant for the Bobcats as they finished with 11 while having only four errors. Tabor served up five aces with one error. The digs were nearly equal as the 'Cats finished with 49 – two more than the Bluejays. Peru State finished with six total blocks while Tabor finished with two.
 
Dawson Sharman (Sidney) led Peru State with 12 kills while hitting .400 and Claire Cudney (Marysville, Kan.) added 11 and hit a career-best .556. Tyra Mollhoff (Lincoln) added six kills while finishing with a .667 hitting percentage.  
 
Darlene Quinonez Holguin (Anthony, N.M.) and Cassidy Davis each finished the contest with 14 assists.
 
Quinonez Holguin, Cudney, Sharman, Davis, and Arianna Waschowski (Bellevue) each had two service aces with Alexis Cox (Brighton, Colo.) adding one.
 
Sharman led the way with a game-high 15 digs while Davis finished with nine. Cudney added seven digs and Quinonez Holguin had six.
 
Pyper Roseberry (LaVista) had one solo block and three block assists. Cudney, Mollhoff, and Grace Frederick (Benkelman) each had two block assists.
 
Peru State improved to 1-1 following the match while Tabor was 0-1.

Friends Highlights
 
The Falcons topped the Bobcats 25-23, 15-25, 25-20, 25-17 to move to 1-1 on the year while Peru State fell to 1-2.
 
First Set Action
 
Friends score the first three points primarily off of Peru State errors. Mallory Matthies (Omaha) put the 'Cats on the board first with a kill coming off an assist from Davis.
 
The Falcons maintained the led until a kill by Sharman from Davis tied the set at 8-8. After Friends scored the ninth point, the Bobcats scored three straight to go up 11-9 with Sharman/Davis finishing the run with a kill/assist.
 
After leading 12-10, the Bobcats saw Friends rattle off five straight points to move to a 15-10 advantage. Then, the 'Cats would go on a run of their own which started with a kill from Mollhoff on an assist from Quinonez Holguin. Peru State would maintain its lead until the Falcons knotted it at 18-18. A kill by Hannah Sexton (Sedalia, Colo.) from Quinonez Holguin gave the Bobcats its last lead.
 
Peru State would tie it at 23-23 on a kill by Sharman from Davis, but the Falcons scored the last two for the first set win.
 
Second Set Action
 
The early part of the second set was tight until the 9-7 point with Peru State leading. The Bobcats would score five straight points which started with a Sharman/Davis combination and ending with a Mollhoff/Quinonez Holguin combo. This put the 'Cats up 14-7 at that point.
 
Friends would pull within four at 17-13 before the Bobcats would go on another run which started with a Falcons serving error. A Friends attacking error would give Peru State a 22-13 lead. Later, a kill by Matthies from Davis was followed by a kill by Mollhoff to make it 24-15. Cheyenne Birkle (Holden, Mo.) would serve up an ace to finish the set.
 
Third Set Action
 
A kill from Matthies off a Davis assist started the third set. However, Friends would go on a 6-1 run at that point to lead 6-3. Peru State would eventually pull back within two at 7-5 on a kill by Alyssa Childers (Lincoln).  Another run by the Falcons would stretch their lead out to 13-6 before Peru State would come back to 13-10 with the last point coming on a Matthies kill from Davis.
 
A 6-0 run by Friends put the Falcons up 19-10 forcing the 'Cats to play from behind. Peru State would eventually get to a 22-20 deficit after Matthies and Davis hooked up again, but Friends would end the set with three straight points.
 
Fourth Set Action
 
The first part of the fourth set was back and forth with the set being tied at 7-7 before Friends scored five straight points. A kill from Mollhoff from Davis would stop that run and the 'Cats added two more to pull within two at 12-10.
 
The Bobcats would still be within three at 17-14 after a service ace from Birkle, but four straight Falcon points gave Friends a commanding lead on their way to the fourth set and eventual match win.
 
Peru Individual Statistics
 
Sharman led the way with 16 kills while Cudney added ten. Matthies and Mollhoff each finished with eight kills.
 
Davis led the team with 25 assists while Quinonez Holguin added 20.
 
Sharman had a match-high three service aces while Birkle added two. Quinonez Holguin finished with one service ace.
 
Cudney led the team with 19 digs while Sharman finished with 17. Cox was also in double-digit digs with 12.
 
No Bobcat had a solo block. Alexandria Chavarria (Hollister, Calif.) had two block assists with Childers and Mollhoff each being credited with one.
 
Bethel Highlights
 
The Threshers from Bethel took a 3-1 win over Peru State in both team's first game on Saturday. Bethel won 25-18, 19-25, 25-17, 26-24 to improve to 2-3 on the season while the Bobcats fell to 1-3.
 
First Set Action
 
Chavarria put the Bobcats on the board first with kill from Quinonez Holguin. A Frederick kill from Hannah Burianek (Lincoln) gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. The game was back and forth and was tied at 8-8 before a setter dump by Quinonez Holguin put the 'Cats back on top. The teams battled back and forth with the game being knotted at 14-14 before Bethel ran off four straight points.
 
A kill by Roseberry was followed by a service ace by Birkle to pull the 'Cats back to within two points at 18-16. That would be as close as the Bobcats would get during the rest of the set.
 
Second Set Action
 
The second set was tight throughout the early part with the game being tied at 8-8 before Mollhoff put down a kill to give Peru State a lead. The set would be later tied at 12-12 and 16-16 before a Thresher attack error gave the Bobcats the lead for good.
 
A kill by Matthies on an assist from Davis would give Peru State the 25-19 win.
 
Third Set Action
 
Peru State took an early lead in the third set, but it quickly vanished. Matthies started the set with a kill from Davis which was followed by a Quinonez Holguin. A Mollhoff kill gave the 'Cats a 3-0 advantage. A 14-3 run by the Threshers made the score 14-6 before Frederick put down a kill to pull the Bobcats within seven at 14-7.
 
Bethel would stretch its lead to 19-9 before Mollhoff added another kill on an assist from Davis. A Sexton kill from Quinonez Holguin put the score at 19-11. The rest of the set was back and forth before the Threshers eventually won 25-17.
 
Fourth Set Action
 
The final score would indicate that it was very tight throughout, but at times, it was not. After being tied at 3-3, Bethel scored the next five points before Sexton got a kill from Burianek. The Threshers would maintain their lead until a kill by Cox from Burianek tied the set at 14-14. Back-to-back attack by Bethel gave Peru State a 16-14 advantage.
 
The Bobcats would hold onto the lead until the Threshers tied it up at 18-18. Another attack error by Bethel put Peru State back up. Neither team would have more than a one-point advantage with the Bobcats having the lead at 23-22 after a kill from Mollhoff off an assist from Davis.
 
After Bethel tied it at 23 each, Sharman put down a kill from Davis to give the 'Cats set point. But, that would be the last point Peru State would get as the Threshers scored the next three points for the win.

Peru Individual Stats
 
Mollhoff finished with a match-high 13 kills while Sharman added ten. Childers finished with eight while hitting .500. Frederick and Matthies each added five.
 
Davis finished with 17 assists while Quinonez Holguin added ten.
 
Quinonez Holguin, Davis, Waschowski, and Birkle each had one service ace.
 
Cudney and Birkle were the team leaders in digs with 15 and 13 respectively.
 
Mollhoff was credited with one solo block and one block assist. Matthies added two block assists with Childers credited with one.
 
Bethany Highlights
 
The match was close throughout with the Swedes narrowly edging Peru State in each set – 25-22, 25-20, and 25-23.
 
First Set Action
 
Bethany took a 3-0 lead before a kill by Mollhoff from Davis put the 'Cats on the board. Later the Bobcats would tie it at 4-4 only to see the Swedes run off three straight point. Peru State's first lead came at 9-8 after a Sexton kill.
 
Later the Bobcats would lead 17-15 on a Matthies kill from Quinonez Holguin only to see the Swedes eventually go up 19-18.  Peru State's final lead came at 21-20 after an attack error by Bethany. The Swedes would outscore the 'Cats 5-1 after that point to get the first set win.
 
Second Set Action
 
A Sexton kill from Davis started the second set. Later, the Bobcats would have a 6-2 lead after back-to-back attack errors by the Swedes. Bethany would tie it up later at 11-11, but Sharman would put the 'Cats back on top with a kill.  After the set was tied at 14-14, the Swedes scored three straight and the Bobcats could not respond.
 
Third Set Action
 
A Sharman kill would tie the score at 1-1 in the third set. The set would later be tied at 3-3 after a kill from Cudney on an assist from Matthies. The Swedes would lead for a good portion of the rest of the set until Sexton would tie it at 19-19 with a kill on an assist from Davis.
 
Following a Bethany timeout, Sharman added a kill from Davis which was preceded by a Cudney service ace to make it 21-19. It looked like the Bobcats were in control, but the Swedes thought different as they finished off the set on a 6-2 run for the match win.
 
Peru Individual Statistics
 
Sexton led the team with one of her better performances in a Bobcat uniform. She finished with ten kills while hitting .400. Cudney added nine with Sharman adding six. Mollhoff and Matthies each had five kills.
 
Davis led the 'Cats with 22 assists while Quinonez Holguin contributed 14.
 
Cudney had three service aces with Quinonez Holguin finishing with one.
 
Sharman finished the match with ten digs with Cudney adding seven. Cox finished with six digs.
 
Mollhoff was credited with one solo block.

Upcoming Contests
 
Peru State will be participating in the Go Sarpy Labor Day Tournament hosted by Bellevue University next Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the 'Cats will face Lawrence Tech (Mich.) at 9 a.m. and then take on College of the Ozarks at 1 p.m. For Lawrence Tech, Peru State will be their first opponent of the season. The College of the Ozarks will play a couple of matches this week before facing the Bobcats in the tournament.
 
On Saturday, Peru State will take on McPherson (Kan.) at 3 p.m. and Westmont (Calif.) at 5 p.m. McPherson opened its season with a 3-1 start as they played in the KCAC Fall Fling. Westmont is out to a 4-1 mark.
