Caitlyn Ward scored 11 points and pulled in eight rebounds, but it was not enough as the Sidney Cowgirls fell to Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson 61-51 on Thursday, Jan. 4 at the Sidney High School gym.
Sidney got off to a slow start, but went on a 13-3 run to tie the game up at 15 in the second quarter.
With seven seconds to go in the second quarter and the Cowgirls down by six, Adi Williams made a basket at the buzzer to get Sidney within four, 27-23.
With 3:18 left to go in the game, Ward made a three-point shot to get the Cowgirls within five points, 50-45, but unfortunately thats all the closer Sidney would get as Council Bluffs, Thomas Jefferson pulled away to get the win.
This was a game that could have went either way as Sidney would get in striking distance, but couldn’t get the lead.
“That is one of the most physical teams we played all year,” coach Amy McClintock said. “They (Thomas Jefferson) are in really good shape and they trap everywhere.”
The pressure Thomas Jefferson put on Sidney, forced the Cowgirls to make mistakes.
“We had way too many turnovers.  We were right there in the game, we had a few shots that we didn’t make, and we turned the ball over,” said McClintock.
Leading scorer for the Cowgirls was Maddy Duncan with 18.  Other scorers for Sidney were Williams, 13; Ward, 11; Camryn McClintock, three; and Liz Lang, Alexis Massey, and Danica Laumann, two each.
The rebounding leader was McClintock with 10; Ward had eight; and Duncan had five.
Sidney will be at Heartland Christian on Friday, Jan. 5 starting at 6 p.m.
