In a newly released video ahead of Veterans Day, Joni Ernst, the first female combat veteran to serve in the U.S. Senate, reflects on what her military service means to her and her daughter.

In the 60-second video, Joni reflects on her more than 23 years in uniform, including leading a unit in the Middle East that drove convoys through Kuwait and Southern Iraq. Today, Joni’s daughter Libby is following her mom’s footsteps and is working to become an Army officer as well.

“She grew up with an understanding that we need to give back, whether it’s our communities, our state, or our nation,” Joni says in the video. “Being able to serve in our nation’s uniform is something she knew was so important to me and now it’s also very important to her to be able to give back to our country.”
