Update: One of the two suspects to lead law enforcement on a high speed chase, followed by a search after they wrecked and abandoned the vehicle they had allegeldly stolen was apprehended yesterday. A report came in to the Fremont County Sheriff's office that a subject was running south on the West Nishnabotna levee. Deputies responded and apprehended Sean Christopher Schmidt, 37, of St. Joseph, Mo.
He is being held pending charges of conspiracy to manufacture a controlled substance, unauthorized transportation of anhydrous ammonia, theft 2nd, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a percursor.
Original story:
A high speed car chase that started in Nodaway County, Mo., ended with a crash and on-foot search for two suspects Thursday. The suspects were not found and may have jumped into the Nishnabotna River.
Events started the morning of Feb. 2 when a resident of Burlington Junction, Mo., started her car to warm it up and went back inside her home, said Nodaway County Sheriff Darren White. When she came out at 8:50 a.m., her white Hyundai Santa Fe was missing.
White said the vehicle was equipped with GPS equipment so officials were able to track the vehicle to Interstate-29, where the pursuit began.
The vehicle was driven north on Interstate-29 where White said the driver of the vehicle allegedly tried to hit an Iowa deputy, who fired shots at the vehicle. It was not known if the vehicle or occupants were hit.
Nebraska County deputies responded to the Highway 2 river bridge in case the driver exited I-29 to head west. However, the driver continued north before leaving the interstate and being pursued on rural roads in Fremont County.
White said law enforcement lost sight of the vehicle for a time and found it had rolled into a field east of 275 northeast of Hamburg near the Nishnabotna River where it had caught on fire and caused a grass fire. Firefighters reponded to the scene.
It is believed that two suspects exited the vehicle, said a Fremont County Sheriff’s Office official.
While area schools locked down temporarily, a variety of law enforcement agencies searched on foot for the suspects. White said the search was focusing near the Nishnabotna River and included three tracking dogs.
