Russell Hemeter and Andrew Thompson of the Nishnabotna boys’ track and field team qualified for the state meet during action at the district meet at Mount Ayr last week.
Hemeter qualified in the 400 meter hurdles, 400 meter dash and 800 meter run, while Andrew Thompson qualified in the 1600 and 3200 meter races.
Hemeter posted a personal best and finished second in the 400 meter dash. He set a new school record for the 400 meter hurdles and placed first. Hemeter was also first in the 800.
Thompson ran a personal best in the 1600 meters and took second. He set a new school record and placed first in the 3200 meters.
In addition to the qualifying efforts, Nishnabotna had near misses on both the girls’ and boys’ side at districts.
Hemeter just missed qualifying for a fourth event. He finished third in the long jump. The winner leaped 19’8.25”. Hemeter, who leaped 19’7.5”, was in position to take second and the state qualifying position that went with that medal, but a late jumper, whose previous best in the competition was 19’2”, leaped 19’8” on his last attempt to take second.
On the girls’ side, Megan Gardner narrowly missed qualifying for state in the discus. She was leading the event going into the finals, but ended up in second place and narrowly out of state qualifying position.
Amanda Brennan ran 5:31 in the 1500 meters. The cut off for state qualification was 5:30.
Looking at the district team race, the Nishnabotna boys’ team finished fifth, while the girls’ team took eight place.
Hemeter and Thompson will represent the Nishnabotna program at the state meet, which began Wednesday at Drake University in Des Moines and will conclude Saturday.
Hemeter will run in the fast heat of the 400 meter hurdles. His time places him in the middle of the state field for both 400 and 800 meters.
Thompson has the third best time in the 3200. His time puts him in the field of the state field for the 1600.
