A total of 60 Hamburg swimmers dove into a season of eight meets on Monday, June 5, at Rock Port, Mo., under the direction of new coaches in Katelyn Harbour, a college student at the University of South Dakota and Elayna Mincer, a 2017 graduate of Sidney High School.
After opening the season at Rock Port, the Hamburg squad got its first meet win on Wednesday at home against Shenandoah.
Other swims this month include, at Auburn against the host and East Mills on June 12; at Plattsmouth against the host and Bellevue on June 14; at home against Tarkio and Rock Port on June 19; at Lewis Central against the host, Sidney and Bellevue on June 21, at Nebraska City against the host, Red Oak and Maryville on June 26, and at home against Red Oak on June 28.
Goals for this year’s group will be to always improve time and also to develop competitive relays. Overall, Harbour said the team has a good group of younger swimmers so part of the swim season will be basic instruction. Mincer said the difficulty of that task will be lessoned by a group of eager veterans.
“The older kids really help with the little kids when we practice. They are good about that,” said Mincer.
