The Nishnabotna baseball team, which won sub state last night at Council Bluffs, will open play at the Iowa State Baseball Championships in Des Moines at 8 p.m. Friday against Newman Catholic, Mason City.

Nishnabotna, 19-5, is the No. 8 seed of the tourney. Newman Catholic is seeded No. 1 with a mark of 34-2.

Late season losses to Sidney and East Mills ruined the chances for a Corner Conference title for the Nishnabotna Blue Devils. Tuesday's result more than made up for that disappointment.

Andrew Thompson didn’t run distance races in junior high.
He only ran the 1600 a handful of times as a freshman.
When this season started, Thompson seemed poised to continue to run in his feature race, the 800 meters.

A fifth place finish for the girls’ team and standout performances by Andrew Thompson and Russell Hemeter of the boys’ squad were the  highlights of opening week for the Nishnabotna track and field program.
