Hamburg, Iowa —
Of the six Hamburg educators whose contracts the superintendent recommended be terminated as a cost-saving measure, two were spared by the school board and four were not.
The contracts of Debra Bolander, special education teacher; Kelly Carey, talented and gifted coordinator; Holly Netley, Spanish teacher; and Todd Quick, athletic director/physical education teacher, were terminated. They will not return for the 2009-10 school year.
Motions to terminate the contracts of industrial arts teacher Bruce DuVal and kindergarten teacher Elizabeth Webber did not pass.
Superintendent Paul Sellon listed the following reasons for the reduction in force: declining enrollment, budget restrictions and problems, reduction of positions, not enough students to justify programs, and realignment of school organization and realignment of staff.
Each motion to terminate a contract was voted upon individually by roll-call. Greg Warden voted against terminating any contracts. Bill Green voted in favor of terminating all six. Lori Burge and Charlie Dovel joined Warden in voting against terminating DuVal’s contract. Dovel also voted against terminating contracts for Netley and Quick. Burge, Hilary Christiansen, Dovel and Warden voted against terminating Webber’s contract.
Previously the board has said that no program will be eliminated. The cuts will reduce budget costs by $150,000- $200,000.
In other business, progress is being made for sharing more with Farragut. The board voted to adopt its 2009/2010 calendar which will be similar to Farragut’s calendar but not identical. It also voted to enter into a 28E agreement with Farragut for guidance counselor, librarian services and business services.
“We’re a year away from (calendars) being identical,” Sellon told board members.
The start and end dates are a couple days off, professional development days are similar but the biggest difference is Farragut’s first semester ends before Christmas and Hamburg’s ends in January.
High School Principal Jan Harris said that students will follow the calendar of their home district if they are taking classes at another. Hamburg students will miss five class days per semester of courses taught in Farragut.
He said, as he is developing a class schedule, he will take into account the student’s needs and will not parallel required classes at times classes are offered in Farragut.
“Our goal over the next year is to come up with a unified calendar for the four districts in the county,” he said.
Harris said there is so much sharing going on (Sidney is sharing with Fremont-Mills and Farragut), that it is advantageous for the four districts to be on one calendar.

In the 28E with Farragut for sharing a guidance counselor, librarian services and business services, the guidance counselor will be in Hamburg two days a week, the librarian will be Hamburg half a day every other week and the business manager will split time 50/50.
The Farragut school board voted to approve the 28E agreements last week.
Farragut’s business manager, Denise Stevens, will be the business manager for both districts and current Hamburg business manager Rhonda Shirley will be transportation manager for both districts; however, the 28E agreements for transportation and building maintenance will not be voted on until next month.
“Some of that we’re still working through,” Sellon said.
He said the shared services will enhance state funds for the district through weighted enrollment.
