Hamburg and Farragut have finalized eight areas for sharing for the 2009/2010 school year and two more are waiting to be approved.

“A number of sharing arrangements are on the docket,” Superintendent Paul Sellon said.

The areas that have been finalized are: business manager, director of operations, transportation manager, technology services, family and consumer science, guidance, library/media specialist, teacher.

Farragut Schools voted to approve sharing the superintendent position at their meeting last week; however, Hamburg Schools have not yet voted on the proposal. They will hold an executive session this week with Superintendent Paul Sellon to discuss the topic.

School Board member Hilary Christiansen questioned if the school had legal grounds to hold an executive session to discuss sharing the superintendent position.

Sellon said it was at the request of the employee, meaning himself.

Iowa law states a closed or executive session is allowed “To evaluate the professional competency of an individual whose appointment, hiring, performance or discharge is being considered when necessary to prevent needless and irreparable injury to that individual's reputation and that individual requests a closed session.”

The board said they would set another meeting if necessary on Aug. 25 to vote on any issue that would arise from the closed session.

“I want to get it done as soon as possible so Farragut knows,” board member Charlie Dovel said. “There’s another district depending on what we’re doing.”

The other area for potential sharing that has not been finalized is sharing of a nurse. Since the departure of Teresa Woodward as the district nurse, the school has offered the nursing position to a candidate; however, that person has not yet accepted.

The board asked if all personnel were aware of changes in the responsibilities in the eight shared positions.

“What things do we ask Denise (Stevens, shared business manager) and what things do we ask Rhonda (Shirley, transportation director),” Christiansen asked.

Sellon said that information would be rolling out to the staff on Friday.

In addition to the special meeting to discuss the Superintendent on Aug. 18 at 7 p.m., the board will also have special meetings on Aug. 24 and Aug. 31 with the Farragut School Board to walk through each district’s buildings. They will walk through Hamburg schools on Aug. 24 and walk though Farragut schools on Aug. 31. If necessary, a special meeting will be held Aug. 25 to vote on sharing superintendents.
