The Hamburg City Council approved the contract for a 28E agreement for law enforcement with the county at their regular meeting on Feb. 9. It will take effect March 1.

In the mean time, Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope has hired a deputy to fill the vacancy left by Steve MacDonald as well as a second new deputy with the income from the contract with Hamburg.

Randy Chapman and Cassandra Hoffage will join the department as deputies. Hoffage, a Minnesota native, is looking to relocate to Hamburg.

While she will live in Hamburg, she will not be solely responsible for the town; the deputies will have a regular shift rotation.

Aistrope said they are in talks with the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy to determine if she needs to take 8 weeks or 13 weeks of training.

Hoffage has a 4-year law enforcement degree and is a certified EMT.

“I think she’ll be a good asset for the department,” Aistrope said.

He said that another new deputy will be added in July. “I spoke with the board of supervisors and they agreed that since there have been so many calls to the western part of the county another deputy is needed,” he said.

The council voted to send the city’s police vehicle to the shop to repair dents to the body and to sell it to the Sheriff’s office, along with other police equipment. Kent Benefiel said the Kelly Blue Book value of the vehicle is roughly $9,000 and Aistrope will examine the other equipment to determine its value.
