Hamburg, Iowa —
It was a close call for Deputy Randy Chapman when a semi truck hit his parked patrol vehicle while he was assisting the Missouri State Patrol on I-29 just south of Hamburg.
On Aug. 15, Chapman responded to a vehicle accident at the 123 mile marker just south of Hamburg in Missouri. He parked his patrol vehicle in the left lane on the north bound lanes.
“I was directing traffic to the right hand lane to provide a safe area for the rescue personnel to work,” he said.
“We were just about done, and I had crossed the interstate to pick up some equipment that Hamburg Rescue had left. As I was picking up the equipment, I heard the squeal of tires.”
Chapman said, when he looked back to the north bound side, he saw a white semi truck “with his trailer brakes locked and sliding.”
Chapman said the driver of the semi swerved to the right, running another car off the highway. “Then he swerved back to the left and struck my patrol vehicle in the passenger side,” Chapman said. “The semi continued past my vehicle and tipped over on its side, sliding into the median.”
No one was injured.
The Missouri State Patrol is investigating the accident. The semi was driven by Gregory Smyth, 49, of Council Bluffs.
Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope said that most likely the patrol vehicle is a total loss.
