Iowa Congressman David Young  has announced that he is accepting applications for nominations to the military service academies of the U.S. Armed Forces.
He encouraged Iowans from across the 3rd Congressional District to consider applying for a congressional nomination to these prestigious academies.
“The students who are accepted will take on an incredible journey that will test their resolve–in the classroom, as leaders, and most importantly their dedication to selfless service to country,” said Congressman Young.
“I encourage every young Iowan with an interest in making that powerful commitment to consider applying to a U.S. service academy,” he said.
The United States Military Academies are all top-rated four-year liberal arts institutions.
Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: The Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.; The Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y.; The United States Military Academy (Army) West Point, N.Y.; and the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.
Admission to the fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, is determined by an annual nationwide competition.
Congressman Young's nomination process is very competitive and is led by the 3rd Congressional District Academy Review Board, an 18-member board of community leaders from throughout the 3rd District.
Nominations to the academies are open to residents of the 3rd District who are between 18 and 22 years old before July 1 of the year of admission.
Applicants must also be U.S. citizens, legal residents of Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District, and unmarried with no dependents.
Students who wish to be considered for a nomination from Congressman Young to attend a service academy as a freshman in 2018 must first fill out the online application at: Young.House.Gov/services/military-academy-nominations. Then all required materials and paperwork must turned in no later than Oct. 30.
Applicants must be available to appear before the Academy Board for an interview on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Veterans Memorial Center-American Legion Post 403,  910 Main Street, Van Meter, IA 50261.
