Fourth of July festivities on Monday July 3 in Hamburg will culminate with fireworks on the baseball field at dusk and include fun activities at the Hamburg Fire Department.
Aaron Wray of the Hamburg Fire Department said a free-will donation BBQ of hot dogs and hamburgers will be complemented by educational and fun experiences at their holiday celebration this year.
Kids and adults at the celebration will be afforded chances to ride on a fire truck and to explore the Fire Safety/Storm Warning Trailer.
Wray said the trailer provides simulations for educational purposes.
“It gives you a run down on what to do if an emergency situation arises,” said Wray. “The kids enjoy going through it.”
The event will last from 5 p.m. until just before the start of the fireworks.
Money from free will donations will be used for fire prevention and fire safety education products.
Wray said the department will purchase fire safety literature and are also seeking to purchase a mock house that simulates fires. The house will show fires in different rooms of and give kids a chance to shoot water at those portions of the house until the fires are “put out.”
By having the mock house, Wray said there is a better chance that fire fighter’s safety messages will be heard.
“It gives them something to do besides listening to us,” Wray said. “They learn more if it’s hands on.”
While the mock house will help deliver fire safety messages, Wray said obtaining literature is also important. If families take information home with them, it might have the effect of starting conversations about fire safety that are critical.
“We encourage families to make a plan,” said Wray.
