A house fire in Hamburg Tuesday night resulted in an estimated $50,000 in damage. Murl Dovel’s rental property at 1501 Park Street caught fire around 9:30. Kim and Chris Copeland are renting the property. There were no injuries.
By the time fire crews arrived, flames had reached the attic above the kitchen. The majority of the damage to the house was heat and water damage in the kitchen, attic and porch. Some belongings were salvaged.
Hamburg Fire Chief Dan Sturm reported that the source of the fire was a shorted out electrical box on the porch outside the kitchen.
Kim said she was putting her two small children to bed when the lights began flickering. She eventually checked the fuse box and she said flames were coming out of it. She then exited the home with her children and called 911. Her husband was not home at the time of the fire.
Kim said the smoke detectors did not go off prior to her leaving the house and she is thankful the fire did not start any later. “Another hour later and we would have been asleep,” she said.
“It was like nothing I ever experienced and I don’t want to experiences anything like it again.”
Sturm said it took several hours to extinguish the fire and that firefighters were initially cautious in attacking the blaze because they were not aware that the the alley transformer had blown and that the water would not pose a danger.
Hamburg, Sidney and Riverton units responded to the fire.
The Red Cross is providing assistance to the family, who is currently staying with Kim’s mother. They did not have insurance on the contents of the house.
