After waiting through a 17-hour plus weather-related delay, Nishnabotna got its first taste of state during action at Principal Park in Des Moines Saturday afternoon.
Defending state champ Newman Catholic, got off to a fast start, however, scoring six runs in the first two innings on the way to a 9-1 victory.
Coach Luke Stockstell said nerves were a bit of a factor for his team, but also gave credit to the Newman ball club for making plays.
“I am not going to put them down and say it was all our miscues,” Stockstell said.
To be fair, walks were a factor.
Starter Kaleb Kahue, Carroll Heitshusen and Russell Hemeter combined to walk 11 and hit two batters.
At the same time, Nishnabotna should be congratulated for keeping the game in hand.
Blue Devil pitching helped to strand 13 Newman baserunners on the game.
Defensive highlights included a diving stab by Doug Raymond and a strike out throw out double play by pitcher Caroll Heitshusen, catcher Kaleb Kahue and infielder Manny Martinez.
Offensively, the Nishnabotna team got hits from Kahue, Riley Scroggie and Hemeter.
Kahue scored the only run of the game for Nishnabotna.
Martinez also had an RBI.
